KZION LDS Music

KZION came online in the fall of 2000 and is the founding KZION channel. KZION plays all types and styles of music including pop, contemporary, country, jazz, folk, inspirational and many others. KZION is perfect for becoming acquanted with what LDS music has to offer and to find new music.

KZION History

My name is John Hesch and I began KZION LDS Internet Radio in September of 2000. Internet radio was still fairly new at that time and few LDS were familiar with LDS music beyond The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Afterglow, and Kenneth Cope. After spending a lot of time browsing and sampling the music on LDS Musicworld, the only LDS music website at the time, I decided to try to discover a way to introduce LDS music to LDS all over the world.

In June of 2000 my old business partner Kim Siever and I, contacted Janet Clayton Sloan after we heard a song of hers called “Love is a Verb”. This song fit nicely with our home & visiting teaching website LDSTeach. We asked Janet if we could offer Love is a Verb as a free download to our website visitors and newsletter subscribers. She graciously agreed and soon Love is a Verb became our top download on LDSTeach. Kim and I were impressed with the level of enthusiasm we received over the song. We began contacting other LDS musicians and offering to promote their music on LDSTeach.

I was convinced there was a demand for quality music that spoke from an LDS perspective, and so I became involved in the LDS Musicians group and heard the stories of many LDS musicians who poured their life savings into making faith-centered music, but rarely saw a return on their investment. In response to the need for a medium in which LDS musicians and songwriters could showcase their talents and for a radio station that would be available worldwide and provide quality and uplifting music, I began KZION.

Since KZION began streaming back in 2000, it has gained the attention of all the major LDS recording companies receiving large donations of CD's from Deseret Book, Tantara Records, Highway Records, Heartrise Music, and Sounds of Zion. KZION has been written about in the Deseret News, BYU Daily Universe and others, here, here, here, and here. KZION also broadcast the 2002 Faith Centered Music Association Pearl Awards live to hundreds of listeners from around the world.

The Pearl Awards was also broadcast live over KZION Internet Radio, reaching all 50 states and 24 countries around the world. KZION reported listeners tuning into the program from as far away as Croatia. Meridian Magazine

KZION LDS Radio was nominated for a Pearl Award in 2003.

Besides the contributions of the large recording companies, KZION receives three to four CD's a month from independent LDS musicians.

“Media in all their marvelous manifestations are the most powerful and important influence on culture, humanity, politics, religion, morality and ultimately the future of civilization. It is a bold and brutal battle for the hearts and minds of men and women — and increasingly, our children.”
